Overview

Based on Claude Garamond's elegant 16th-century typeface, this particular cut of Garamond was developed in 1924 at Stempel AG, a German type foundry. This versatile serif typeface has a small x-height, so more words fit on a line. Short ascenders and descenders allow lines to be set closer together. Its italic (or Kursiv) style is particularly graceful. The very readable and versatile Garamond works well for long blocks of text, reports, magazines, books, manuals, correspondence, and slides.

Garamond Premier Pro is one of the Adobe fonts similar to Garamond which was also originally based on Garamond. Designed and published in 1988, this font was the work of Robert Slimbach, who visited Antwerp where Garamond’s work is kept in a museum. Adobe Garamond Font Family. EB Garamond is an open source project to create a revival of Claude Garamont’s famous humanist typeface from the mid-16th century. Description
Monotype Drawing Office 1922. This typeface is based on roman types cut by Jean Jannon in 1615. Jannon followed the designs of Claude Garamond which had been cut in the previous century. Garamond's types were, in turn, based on those used by Aldus Manutius in 1495 and cut by Francesco Griffo. The italic is based on types cut in France circa 1557 by Robert Granjon. Garamond is a beautiful typeface with an air of informality which looks good in a wide range of applications. It works particularly well in books and lengthy text settings.
