Despite these modern times, we all yearn that analog warmth. Acustica Audio Taupe tries to bring that warmth in the digital domain with a host of digital sampled tape machines.

by Vince Bellanova, Nov. 2019

Acustica Audio is a company from Italy that is building a strong reputation for its high-quality plugins. Their products take advantage of a technology capable of providing seamless emulations of classic hardware machines and their non-linear behavior.

Without being overly technical, several techniques (described here: http://www.acustica-audio.com/pages/engine) like the Nonlinear Convolution, Vectorial Volterra Kernels Technology and Time-Varying Models are merged into a single model to emulate classic pieces of hardware. Or, said in another way, several effects or machines can be sampled and their sonic characteristics can be brought into the digital world.

These warm and faithful emulations are the outcome of years of research and they are responsible for some really great sounding stuff. Appreciations from professionals aren’t missing, in fact some of the names that worked closely with Acustica Audio include Greg Wells and Luca Pretolesi of Studio DMI (his name is especially associated with the Diamond series).

In this review we are going to explore Taupe, an intriguing and powerful tool of the Aqua series that consists of a tape machine emulation plug-in at its core, expanded with a channel strip that includes an EQ and a Compressor/Limiter.

Following the idea of naming plug-ins with colors, Taupe is not an exception, and its name also make suggest the word “tape” in our ears, preparing us for an encounter with the tool. The idea behind Taupe was to sample 21 analog and digital tape machines, three EQs from famous American consoles and two compressors (a compressor and a limiter). The resulting 40 crafted programs are capable of bringing in our DAWs the sound of another era, from subtle saturation to more evident sound coloration. The tape machines that Acustica sampled come from different years, ranging from 50s to 90s

Taupe is part of the ever-growing Aqua series of plug-ins and it is based on the Core 13 technology that introduces the new VLA™ technology (Vector Loading Acceleration), which makes the response of the plugin much faster. New algorithms allows further de-noise processing and subsequent elimination of any incorrect low-level behavior (including the so-called “echo bug”).

Taupe offers different plug-ins: Taupe, which is the complete channels strip consisting of Tape, EQ and Comp; the Taupe Comp, Taupe EQ and Taupe Tape as separate modules and their ZL versions, which means Zero Latency, ideal for tracking. I found that it was great to be able to use the different parts of the strip separately, especially because I love the EQ and I am willing to use it everywhere just to add some grit. Surprisingly, we cannot rearrange the order of the module in the channel strip, and this forces us to use the separate plugins to customize the signal path.

The tape, as well as the whole plug-in in general, is fairly simple to use as the controls are not exotic and they are also well documented in the manual. The Tape emulations are organized into four Banks (A to D) containing ten programs each. It is important to not confuse preset with programs, the first being a whole set of parameters for the whole Channel Strip while the programs are related to the Tape module.

The three displays inform us about the program selected, type of emulation and frequency response. The last one simply displays a picture.

The controls here are the Input and Output knob, the Mix knob, the Preset List and the Econo switch. The last one disables the Tape component in the module, something that can be better understood if we take a look at the block diagram to the right.

The Mix controls the amount of tape coloration and ranges from Source to Tape with certain programs, while from Bypass to Source for others. In this last case Bypass will deactivate the harmonic coloration. But before running to heat our signal with the Mix knob, it is important to note that we need to set the Input knob, which governs the internal operating level of the plug-in but, as the manual mentions, is linked to the output level too, which means that setting the Input level will also match the Output level accordingly. The preset list is organized by the name of the mixing engineer who created the preset and the name of the preset refers to the type of instrument/application which is appropriate to apply it to.

The second section in the Channel Strip is the EQ section. Acustica here meticulously sampled three units from famous American and Swiss consoles. We will be able to put our hands on four different bands and on a High Pass filter (even a Low Pass with the B EQ). A, B and C are the three alternatives, and we can select one of them per band, meaning that we can have an emulation for the LF band and another for the HMF band.

This part of Taupe really shines as the emulations are providing super warm tones and are capable of adding an always pleasant coloration on almost any type of track or bus (master bus specially). My favorite is the C band, the most prominent and aggressive of the three and since the test I am putting it on top of Master and Drum Bus more and more frequently. The EQs sound really intense, vivid and worth trying on their own, even outside of the channel strip.

In the audio examples I processed this beat with just a few dBs of boosts and a cut with the EQ C. In the last example, I tried a simple Tape program (D2) boosting the Input knob.

Tape, No EQ

The right amount of tape is the trickiest to set, beginning with the choice of the program where the frequency response graph is a big help, then setting the Input and the Mix knob. Clearly, everything depends on the input material, but a few minutes spent on the knobs can add something absolutely valuable to anything.

The last module is the Comp/Limiter module. This one presents an Input Trim, a Preamp circuit emulation (but just on the single Comp Module, not in the Channel Strip), Threshold, Ratio, a Filter, Attack, Release, Make Up Gain, Dry/Wet and a SHMOD knob which changes the Attack’s behavior. The Limiter features a Threshold control, but fixed Ratio, Attack and Release. We can switch between the Comp and the Limiter with the buttons on the right.

Acustica has made a unique and powerful tool with Taupe, something that is worth the price because you can simply put it on anything, from drums to synths to strings, and put it on the master bus especially. This is probably why Taupe got nominated for plug-in of the year in the SOS awards.

The possibility to use different modules individually is an added value, in particular because you can easily fall in love with a single part of the Strip and use it over and over to add a bit of color. It is a pity that we cannot rearrange the order of the modules in the main strip, though. Also, it must be acknowledged that this precision in the emulations and this warmth-heaven comes at the price of a high CPU demand.

Taupe can be effortlessly installed easily from Aquarius, Acustica’s platform for managing licenses and downloads. You can easily download a trial of Taupe following the instruction on the product page (link below). Also, Acustica frequently offers generous discounts and free plug-ins, a reason why I strongly suggest to subscribe the newsletter and keep your eyes opened.

Taupe is highly recommended not only to mixing and mastering engineers, but also to music producers, sound designers and composers.

Taupe is available in VST, AU and AAX format, for both Mac and PC at the price of €249.00.
